ۿ۴ý University senior Sophia Maltese is the recipient of the 2020 NBC/ۿ۴ý University “Meet the Press” Fellowship.
The fellowship is exclusive to ۿ۴ý University students and was first awarded in 2009 in honor of Tim Russert ’72, who passed away in 2008 following more than 16 years at the helm of “Meet the Press.” The University’s Department of Communication also bears his name.
Maltese, a communication and english double major with a minor in political science, was the Editor-in-Chief of the Carroll News during the 2020-2021 academic year. Maltese has also led the Society of Professional Journalists as the chapter’s president from 2018-2020.
“I am honored to have been selected for this position,” Maltese said. “I have always loved to tell stories, and worked in my classes and at The Carroll News to tell stories that needed to be heard. I am thrilled to continue that work at Meet the Press, an organization that I respect so much for its thorough reporting and data-driven approach to political analysis.”
Her on campus involvement extends to Wۿ۴ý 88.7 FM, where she was the acting news director in 2018-19, and the Honors Program, where Maltese served as president in 2019. Maltese has held several internships during her time at ۿ۴ý, and currently reports and pitches interview-based articles for Cleveland.com as a freelancer following her internship with the company.
The NBC/ۿ۴ý Meet the Press Fellowship is a nine-month position at “Meet the Press,” the top-rated Sunday morning public affairs program and the longest running television program in the world.
