In order to expose students to a broad range of academic inquiry, the Core curriculum requires each student to take a distribution of courses across three disciplinary divisions:

  • Humanities (Communication, English, History, Languages and International Cultures)
  • Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Math & Computer Science, Physics, Psychology)
  • Social Sciences (Economics, Sociology & Criminology, Political Science)

Distribution courses generally represent an introduction to a discipline and have few or no prerequisites, so they are appropriate for students new to university study.

Requirement: each student must take one course (3 credits) in each of the three divisions (for a total of 9 distribution credits). Introductory courses for a student’s major can count for this requirement. Advanced Placement and transfer credit may also be used to meet this requirement as applicable.
