For Faculty

Dear Colleagues:

An integral part of the mission of the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ Writing Center is to provide support to all faculty teaching courses with writing components. Though we are open to any suggestions or requests you might have, consider the following possibilities:

  • We would be happy to visit your class to give a five-minute talk about the Writing Center and how your students would benefit from visiting. Please contact me by phone or e-mail (extension 1911 or msoriano@jcu.edu) to schedule a visit.
  • Consider copying and distributing the Center’s promotional flyer; it provides basic information about the Center’s services.
  • Consider including the following about the Center on your course syllabi:
Located in the O’Malley Center, Room 207, the Writing Center is a free academic resource that is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students from all areas of study who have completed extensive training and can provide another set of eyes for your assignment. You can bring any type of writing assignment to the Center, and consultants can assist you with everything from brainstorming to citations. Please bring any assignment sheets or relevant information to your consultation, as well as a printed copy of your paper. We accept walk-ins but recommend scheduling an appointment, which you can do by completing the Appointment Request form found on our website, emailing writingcenter@jcu.edu, calling 216-397-4529, or stopping in. In addition to weekly hours in OC 207, we also offer After-Hours on Sundays and Wednesdays in Seminar A of Grasselli Library & Breen Learning Center, from 7-9 p.m. Visit our webpage at  for more information.
  • If you already mention the Center on your course syllabi, course materials, or in a lecture, and would like some feedback on the information you include or on how best to present the Center, please contact me.
  • If you are encouraging or requiring students to visit the Center, consider providing us with a copy of your course syllabus and/or assignment guidelines; we keep these on hand to help consultants work with your students more effectively.
  • We would be happy to collaborate with you on designing assignments that integrate Writing Center visits in especially purposeful and beneficial ways.
  • If you are working with a student who you feel would benefit from more intensive and long-term one-on-one writing tutoring, contact me; we can provide these services to a limited number of students each semester.
  • We have adopted a series of handouts (one-four pages each), developed by Utah Valley University, on various topics pertinent to writing instruction. We have permission to copy and distribute these at ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½. These handouts can be found on the website.
  • We have a growing collection of current writer’s handbooks, bibliographies, journals, and other instructional materials; stop by if you’re looking for resources for courses or research.
  • If you are recommending to your students that they purchase a portable writer’s reference, consider suggesting the ;that we use at the Center.
  • If you would like some reader-response or criteria-driven feedback on any of your own writing, please note that I am always happy, on a first come, first served basis, to read and discuss faculty and staff writing.

I look forward to having opportunities to discuss with you writing and writing instruction, and to support your teaching of writing at ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½.

Sincerely,

Maria Soriano Young
