What is encryption? Why do I need it?

Encryption is a technique that makes data technically inaccessible to those without valid permissions. University policy requires that all computers and devices used by the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ employees for university business be encrypted.

Encrypting your laptop and desktop computers and mobile devices is the single most important step you can take to protect your personal information, and ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ University's data, in the event that the device is lost or stolen.

As part of the continued data security protection effort: 

  • Information Technology Services implemented full-disk encryption on all ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ laptops used by the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ employees.
  • All E-Mail containing sensitive data must be encrypted. This means that it must be sent from the university e-mail account as well as use Gmail's confidential mode to help protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. Click here to learn more:
